Full Day Visit
In a full day you will have time to explore all the mediaeval treasures Wells has to offer; including the Bishop’s Palace, The Moat Walk, Wells Cathedral, Vicar’s Close, and St. Cuthbert’s Church. You should also have time to visit our array of independent shops and enjoy a well-earned coffee, lunch and tea in great surroundings.
The Bishop’s Palace and Moat Walk are co-located, so we suggest you start with a coffee at the Bishop’s Table café, before you explore the fabulous gardens and the Palace building.
If you are unlikely to return to Wells in the foreseeable future you should consider buying the combined Bishop’s Palace and Cathedral day pass.

- As you leave the Bishop’s Palace, follow the Moat Walk to your left and as far as the point at which you can see the waterfall from the well pools. Then turn back towards the Market Place and see if you can spot Glastonbury Tor in the distance.
- On a fine day, you would do well to take a light lunch at the Bishop’s Table café, and on a wet or cold day perhaps go for a bite at The Loft café in the Cathedral. If it is too early for lunch, walk past the Cathedral to visit Vicar’s Close first and then make your way to the Loft Café.
- Proceed down the High Street and engage in some retail therapy on your way towards St. Cuthbert’s church, and perhaps grab some refreshments at Greggs or Coffee #1, both of which have a disabled toilet.
- Depending on the weather, you would do well to schedule the Bishop’s Palace and Moat Walk for the brighter half of the day.
- St Cuthbert’s Church has a large entrance door and an awkward threshold, so may not be accessible for a solo wheelchair user.
- The Bishop’s Palace, Wells Cathedral and St. Cuthbert’s Church all have good disabled toilet facilities.
We have asked the Cathedral to reduce the price of Cathedral entry for mobility aid users, as a significant number of the treasures can only be explored by able-bodied people, but have no response as yet.
If you park in the Waitrose long term car park you will pass St. Cuthbert’s on the way to and from the other sights, and can make use of the Waitrose disabled toilets before you set off for home.
