Disabled Toilets
More choice available
Due to the positive attitude of many businesses and organisations in Wells, disabled people now enjoy welcome access to many more disabled toilets than might first be apparent. On the interactive Accessible Wells map, you will find the locations and information about what is available. In summary, you have access to:
- 4x Council provided disabled toilets in four central locations
- 1x disabled toilet inside the Town Hall – during opening hours
- 1x full service Changing Places toilet set into the back of the Town Hall – key control from reception and via Bishop’s Palace reception on Sundays
- 12x businesses and organisations spread across Wells.
Businesses offer a warm welcome
In 2024 we identified a range of businesses that have disabled toilets for customers. We invited them to join us in making Wells more accessible. All those businesses we approached very readily agreed that all disabled people are very welcome to use their disabled toilet facility without any need to become a customer of that business.
There are more businesses in Wells that have disabled toilet facilities. However these are in settings that provide health care, education and care of the elderly, where it is understandably less appropriate to promote public access.
Grading of disabled toilet facilities
We all know too well that some disabled toilets are more accessible, better designed and equipped than others. Our aim is for all the toilets listed on our interactive Accessible Wells map to be visited and assessed by a wheelchair user. When that is completed, we will update the interactive map with a simple classification :
- Is the approach good?
- Is it single user only or is it usable with carer assistance?
- Is it adequately kitted out with facilities?
